Sir, - The circumstances surrounding the "coming out" of Stephen Gately of Boyzone are unfortunate. People have the right to private lives when they live in the spotlight, and that someone was willing to sell this story smacks of sleaze. People's sexual orientation should not be an issue in society's acceptance of their ability, talent, and contribution to public life.
However, hats off to the Boyzone star for making the pre-emptive strike. What he has done is a very brave step for such a public figure. It will also mean that many young gay men and women can have a role model to look up to, something that has hitherto been sadly lacking.
The suicide rate among young gay men and lesbians is disproportionately high compared with their peers in the "straight' community. I'm sure most people in Ireland will wish him well, and continued success in his career. - Yours, etc., David Wilkins,
North Great Georges Street, Dublin 1.
