Sir, – Conor Brady (Opinion, February 11th) rightly criticises the unacceptable and possibly illegal practice of gardaí leaking of confidential information about prominent individuals that will besmirch their reputation.
But nowhere in his article does he mention the responsibility of the media for agreeing to publish such leaks. As a former editor of The Irish Times, would he not consider that newspapers have an ethical duty to refrain from aiding and abetting this abuse of authority? The matter of the Garda leak is to be investigated by the Garda Ombudsman.
I suggest that Clare Daly also call for an investigation by the Press Ombudsman. – Yours, etc,
