REDMOND HOLLOWAY, BE,
Sir, - The feeling among many Cork people that Dublin national newspapers have little regard for events or accomplishments in the southern capital was reinforced by your recent report on the Luas bridge at Taney Road, Dundrum. Magnificient in scale as this bridge is, nevertheless it is not, in fact, "the only cable-stayed bridge in the State".
The prestressed structure of this type in Ireland was built in Cork as long as ago as 1985 under the direction of the then city engineer, Liam Fitzgerald. The single-masted cable-stayed structure carries a footbridge and twin 660 mm gas mains over the South City Link dual carriageway at Hibernian Road with a total length of 84 metres.
Details have been included in the IEI region's engineering records resource collection. - Yours, etc.,
REDMOND HOLLOWAY, BE,
Ranelagh,
