Brexit and the Common Travel Area

Sir, – Well done to John FitzGerald for a lucid, concise, and informed analysis of the Brexit negotiation possibilities for Ireland ("Negotiating table with UK reversed by Brexit", Business Opinion, August 12th).

Regarding the Island of Ireland Common Travel Area, being the only bilateral negotiation between Ireland and the UK, there is only one possibility – a hard border within the UK between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. This would enable common travel within the island. There will be no common travel area with the rest of UK, as Ireland remains committed to free movement of EU citizens, and the UK is leaving for this very reason.

The common travel area as we know it dies with the UK exit from the EU.

It is about time the debate was grounded in reality, North and South. – Yours, etc,
