Brexit directions

Sir, – The British government appears to be going off in several different directions on Brexit. Theresa May is signalling a “hard Brexit”. Philip Hammond is talking about give and take while threatening the EU that the UK may turn into a tax haven. Boris Johnson hints at an impending trade deal with Donald Trump, although such a deal cannot legally be done until the UK leaves the EU. The one thing all three have in common is limitless self-confidence. Perhaps they should heed the following advice: “Never put all your egos in one Brexit.” – Yours, etc,

SEAMUS MARTIN,
