Sir, - On your front page (March 11th), you reported that Maeve Binchy trounced Shakespeare. Fair play to her, she's a great author. Unfortunately your article completely ignored an author living in Ireland who was placed 34th on the list, also surpassing Shakespeare and Graham Greene.

Her name is Anne McCaffrey, she is a naturalised Irish citizen living and writing in this country for over 30 years. She has sold well over 25 million books worldwide. Last summer she was hailed by the American Library Association as ["]The Queen of Science Fiction,["] when they awarded her a Lifetime Achievement award for her contribution to young adult fiction. Her ever popular Dragonriders of Pern series will become a television show sometime next year.

It is unfortunate that readers in Ireland had to find this out in the Daily Mail which published the complete list. - Yours, etc., Alec Johnson,
