Sir, I notice that the German government has expressed great concern at the European Commissions decision to lift the ban on British beef by products.

Might I suggest, rather than take illegal action to prevent entry by British products, the Germans merely insist that all their retailers clearly mark the British products with a Union Jack sticker, which, going on the current situation, would probably be just as effective as a poison sticker.

And if the British government object, let them. That'll be a fun day in the European Court, with Britain demanding that its beef be identified as European as opposed to British. I can see the headlines in the Sun already. "Britain says no to Union Jack!" Why, we may even have eurosceptics burning the Union Jack outside Westminster. Sure it's worth trying, if only for the laugh. Yours, etc., Merrion Strand, Strand Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
