Sir, – Richard Bruton, newly appointed Minister for Education and Skills, has made an announcement about opening schools after hours. This follows on from the announcement that some schools may be forced to close due to lack of funding. Would he not first apply himself to ensuring that schools have enough funds to remain open to carry out their main task, educating the young? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – During 26 years in education, the government of the day never asked me for my thoughts or ideas. No doubt Richard Bruton will take a more enlightened approach.
Maybe if there was real consultation and agreement, we would not have the present mess. Believe it or not, teachers and lecturers have positive ideas and are concerned about education.
A colleague told me of one Department of Education negotiation that he attended. The rough message was, “This is the deal – if you don’t like it, the door is over there”. – Yours, etc,
ALEC QUINN,
