Madam, - Jimmy O'Brien from Co Sligo (June 6th) spectacularly misses the point made by Colm Kellaghan (June 5th). The problem is the lack of enlightened planning control.
Of course it's possible for people to continue to live in the rural Irish landscape, to sustain local communities, industries and jobs. However, there is a critical need to stop suburban-style developments that show no understanding of the inherent qualities of the rural landscape.
Whatever about ivory towers, there is a heavy price to be paid for the rampant development in rural Ireland nowadays. To blithely refuse to even engage with this legitimate concern is to live in a fool's paradise. - Yours, etc,
ALLISTER O'BRIEN, FIONA McDONALD, Pembroke Road, Dublin 4.
