Sir, - The Irish Peatlands Conservation Council has mounted a campaign to persuade home owners not to use peat products in their gardens. The British Government will ban the sale of horticultural peat from 2011.
Your edition of February 21st reports that the Irish Government, through the ESB, has pushed a plan through An Bord Pleanála for the construction of a new peat-fired power station that will consume 1.24 million tonnes of peat annually, yielding 55,000 tonnes of ash.
This is the second approval for such a power station in recent days.
