Sir, - Most public transport users affected by last week's one-day bus stoppage were unable to convert to using cars for the day simply because they do not possess one. So - surprise, surprise - with the opening of bus lanes for the day, there was more road space available to cars and little increase in vehicle numbers, leading to less gridlock.
Are we, then, to have a transport policy based on ignoring those who can't afford a car as they are not in a position to add to the gridlock ?
As the Dublin sprawl grows and the Celtic tiger roars on, the pool of public transport users will increasingly convert to car commuting, because this option will always be more attractive unless measures such as bus lanes make public transport significantly quicker. So, good news for the car lobby: your ranks are growing as the city slowly descends into gridlocked chaos - and don't forget to blame it all on the bus lanes ! - Yours, etc.,
