Madam, - Regarding the recent letters expressing concerns over the Bush-Sharon recent declaration, I am reminded of the uncertainties that surrounded the euphoria that greeted the pulling down of the Iron Curtain.
Like most observers, I felt at times, usually in the still of the night, a niggling doubt; without the balance of the USSR, would the sole superpower restrain itself and use its power for the good of all? I worried that the American electoral system is such that money can be what determines the outcome. Put simply, the American presidency can be bought.
Are we now on the brink of the nightmare? To coin a popular American phrase, is Bush the clear and present danger to world peace? Or is there a statesman within struggling to get out? - Yours, etc.,
JIM O'SULLIVAN,
Rathedmond,
