Sir, – What a tiresome business democracy is! The general synod of the Church of Ireland votes – to my great relief and, I believe, that of the vast majority of the church’s members – to uphold its teaching on marriage. This earns it a firm – and, in my view, an unreasonable and intemperate – belt of the Irish Times crozier (Editorial, May 17th). Perhaps your Editorial writer neglected to read the second part of the motion which ensures further discussion with the possibility of future change.
By the way, I voted in favour of divorce in two referendums and support the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010. Is it beyond the understanding of The Irish Times that one can do this and still rejoice in the Church of Ireland’s teaching on marriage? – Yours, etc,
