Called to account

Sir, – I was extremely insulted to read that Colm McCarthy ("Irish economy not going back to 2007 levels, says Colm McCarthy", July 16th) told the National Economic Dialogue last week that the lack of transparency and detail in the government financial accounts made them comparable to tennis club accounts.

I have served diligently as treasurer of the local tennis club for the last seven years to produce exemplary annual accounts and resent having that insult thrown at me.

It would have been much more appropriate for Colm, as an avid soccer follower, to have compared them with the FAI accounts. Double-fault, Colm! – Yours, etc,
