Sir,– It's good to see that we have spent €10 million on restoring the dome of Dublin's Four Courts and plan to spend a similar amount on the support capitals of the building ("Four Courts dome visible again as removal of scaffolding begins", News, August 16th).
Since we achieved independence, this magnificent building has suffered greatly in our care. In recent times Dublin city planners should not have allowed Gandon’s architectural masterpiece to be hidden behind a mask of plane trees along the quays.
We have millions of beautiful trees, and obviously need millions more nationwide, but could we not now sacrifice these overgrown trees in the front of the building, in the interest of an architectural gem? – Yours, etc,
