Madam, - Teresa Murray's suggestion (Letters, July 31st) that psychological problems may cause cannabis use, rather than vice versa, finds support in Khantzian's "Self-Medication Hypothesis of addictive Disorders" ( American Journal of Psychiatry1985, p.1,259).
Furthermore, in a popular book of psychiatric medicine, Peter Kramer claims that "many addicts do kick the street-drug habit once on anti-depressants; and many report that the prescribed medication makes them feel less empty and better able to enjoy ordinary pleasures." - Yours, etc,
DAVID CAMPBELL, Springhill Park, Killiney, Co Dublin.
