A chara, – The Roman Catholic Church seems to be bothered about doing anything about the child abuse scandals only when the public expresses its outrage.

The church’s callous disregard for the simplest of moral principles to protect our children shows the organisation exhibits similar traits to a psychopath.  It is absurd that this organisation is running 92 per cent of our schools, is still eligible for charity status and has 90 per cent of the population ticking the Catholic box at the census.  – Is mise,

Sir, – David Wilkins (May 3rd) is disgracefully unfair in likening Cardinal Brady to “a guard at Auschwitz pleading innocence by saying he was just following orders”. A much fairer analogy would be to a court clerk in a trial where the defendant is found guilty but subsequently released to re-offend. Not even The Irish Times, one would have thought, would blame the court clerk in these circumstances – even if the court clerk went on to become a Supreme Court judge.

But this is Ireland 2012, and the subject of media coverage is the Catholic Church, so the old journalistic maxim applies: when the truth is in conflict with the legend, print the legend. – Yours, etc,
