Madam, - In her perceptive and sensitive column of October 24th on the strange phenomenon of the All-Priests Show, Kathy Sheridan pays an honest tribute to the many nuns and priests who continue to work out their vocation to the suffering and the downtrodden whom we Irish reject.

It has always been so.

All over the world thousands of priests and nuns down the centuries have followed the example of the Good Samaritan. They often worked in spite of and against the received standards and teaching of the Catholic Hierarchy and the civil authorities of their day.

Madam, - Am I mistaken to believe that the necessary transparency required in getting to the bottom of this disgraceful mess will be delivered by the Garda?

In light of their own sorry experience, when might we expect results? In a month, six months, six years - or not at all?

Madam, - Cardinal Connell still appears to be convinced - or under the illusion - that a foreign power, namely the Vatican, still reigns supreme in Ireland, regardless of one's religious convictions or lack of same.

There's a sad name for that: Colonialism. - Yours, etc.,
