Sir, - Aine McCarthy, in her article in Well and Good on August 19th, refers to the sponsorship (for three years) by the Irish Cancer Society of six oncology nurse specialists in various hospitals. This is a welcome and important initiative, but it will make little difference to the majority of the 15,000 Irish people who develop cancer each year.
They and their families will have to cope alone in the days following the devastating diagnosis, when emotional and psychological help is desperately needed, but not offered in the hospitals in which they are patients. - Yours, etc.,
