Caretaker government

Sir, – David Gwynn Morgan asks whether former ministers can remain in office even if they have lost their seats in the Dáil ("What exactly is a caretaker taoiseach?", Opinion & Analysis, March 8th). Article 28.7.2 of the Constitution states that ministers of the government must be members of Dáil Éireann or the Seanad. Does this not suggest that ministers who lose their Dáil seats should disqualify themselves from continuing as ministers or acting as caretaker ministers?

Meanwhile can anyone find an appropriate constitutional authority for the status of a “political corpse”? – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL ANDERSON,

Balgriffin, Dublin 13.
