A Chara, - Tim O'Brien (Property, June 20th) speculates on various future potential uses for the famous but now derelict Carlisle Pier in Dun Laoghaire. As this is a harbour, a central theme should be maritime, and I believe a central focus of the pier redevelopment could be a new home for a radically upgraded National Maritime Museum.

While I appreciate that such an institution already exists in Dun Laoghaire a short distance away, would it not be better sited here, where there could be floating exhibits moored alongside and where it would be have the sea and marine craft all around, in the heart of one the most famous harbours in these islands.

It is a pity that the state recently sold the L.E Eithne for a pittance. Can you imagine this ship was moored beside such a museum in Dun Laoghaire Harbour along with craft of many other eras? -Yours, etc.,
