Madam, - May I add another voice to those calling for the Abbey Theatre to be relocated on the Carlton site in Upper O'Connell Street? This street, the most important in the State, needs the presence of a cultural institution of the highest national importance to help to rescue it from its present state of near decrepitude. For all the council's valiant efforts to impart some grandeur to the street, it is still predominantly an alley of tacky shops and burger bars.
The National Theatre (which should incorporate a theatre museum) needs to take its rightful place at the heart of our capital city, adding a cultural lustre to the area, instead of being buried away in some commercial wasteland. - Yours, etc,
JOHN O'RIORDAN, Theatre Critic, (Public Sector Times), Eglinton Road, Bray.
