Sir, - Your edition of January 28th carried a photograph of crashed cars which the Garda had been placed by the roadside as part of its campaign against dangerous driving. Neither it nor the advice of the Garda will make a smidgen of difference to the majority of our drivers, given that so many serious collisions occur through ignorance. What I would suggest is that the courts, if they haven't already got it, be given the power to make our reckless and dangerous drivers attend, particularly between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., the casualty departments of hospitals. Let them see at first hand what a serious collision can do, not to the car, but to the occupants who, a short time earlier, were whole, living, breathing human beings. The bottom line is simple: nobody dies or heals easily after a serious collision. Let the perpetrators of the carnage see for themselves. - Yours, etc.,Simon Cullen, Birchview Height, Kilnamanagh, Dublin 24.
