BRIAN O CEALLAIGH,
Sir, - On reading Alison Healy's brief, yet alarming report of June 22nd on excavations at Carrickmines Castle, I felt compelled to comment.
Once again, a site of extraordinary value to our tourist industry, not to mention heritage, is set to be destroyed, seemingly without pause for thought. Have we learnt nothing from the debacle that was Wood Quay? Has no one seen the potential of a major tourist attraction located conveniently halfway between Dublin and Glendalough? I have no doubt that thousands of our continental neighbours would choose to visit a site of amazing cultural and historic value.
Yet again we appear to be presented with the opportunity to make a wise choice in relation to our tourist industry and the education of our young in their history, and unless action is taken, we will see concrete and tarmacadam, again, as the solution. Will we ever learn? - Yours, etc.,
BRIAN Ó CEALLAIGH, The Hedgerows, Foxrock, Dublin 18.
