RICHARD TYRELL,
Sir, - I must say I am distraught at the news that the excavation at Carrickmines is not gong to make a blind bit of difference to the route of the South-Eastern Motorway. I have spent many an enjoyable evening walking the quiet roads around Carrickmines, and for many years the history of that area has intrigued me.
From the limited knowledge I have of castles, it appears to me that the sheer size of Carrickmines is amazing in itself. Clearly visible from the road is the gigantic moat and outer wall and ditch which seem to be in an incredible state of preservation.
Am I to asume that this is the type of site that regularly gets destroyed in the name of "progress" throughout the country? I sincerely hope this is not the case.
I challenge anyone to take a stroll down Golf Lane or the Glenamuck Road and tell me what they see is not worth saving. Have we come so far in this country that we have no say in the wanton destruction of our heritage?
Let us not forget that we, the taxpayers are the ones paying for all this, and what will be see for our investment? More roads, more "progress", and more bulldozed castles. - Yours, etc.,
RICHARD TYRELL,
