KEVIN GALLAGHER,
A chara, - Having visited Carrickmines Castle yesterday, I am writing to say how beautiful a site it is. There is a sense of history seeping out of the open earth, a sense of Gaelic Leinster, of lives and battles past.
I am appalled at the plans of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown for the site. Seven of the 10 acres are, I believe, to be cemented over, and the remaining three acres will be sandwiched between new roads and an unusually large roundabout. This would be an act of desecration. It is not necessary, and it can easily be avoided.
The South-Eastern motorway can quite happily pass by, and the castle site can be preserved, with small changes to the road development.
I ask the members of Dunlaoghaire-Rathdown County Council and the members of the National Roads Authority if they have a sense of dignity. I ask Transport Minister, Seamus Brennan, to show his constituents that he has a respect for history. - Is mise,
KEVIN GALLAGHER, Trees Road, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
