Cars and diesel emissions

Sir, – Some years ago our leaders changed the car tax system in order to reward the owners of cars with cleaner emissions. This was despite the fact that such cars were by then the norm and we would have had to buy them anyway.

This resulted in a very significant loss to the exchequer. Now we have found out that many of these cars enjoying greatly reduced car tax are actually spewing out high levels of pollution.

I would like to suggest to the Government that these cars be reassessed and, if they are found to have not achieved the claimed reduced levels of emissions, then we should sue the manufacturers for the loss of the tax revenues caused by their fraud. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL A MacNAMARA,
