CASEMENT BLACK DIARIES

JACK MOYLETT,

JACK MOYLETT,

Sir, - Why do the diehards need to discredit the forensic investigation into Sir Roger Casement's diaries? Why does it matter whether he was homosexual or not?

His sexuality did not prevent him undertaking arduous journeys in most inhospitable climates to expose the atrocities being visited upon the people of the Congo by their civilised European protectors. Nor did any aspect of his character preclude him from spending freezing months in Germany trying to raise a force to resist the British presence in Ireland.

His sexuality didn't matter then. Why does it matter now? - Yours, etc.,

Sir, - Bill McCormack, in his swift and humorous reply (March 22nd) to my letter of the previous day, seemed to misunderstand my phrase, "no dissenting voice allowed to participate in the so-called test process". Again I say, the subjective conclusion reached on the findings of these paltry tests is derisory.

I have informed him that I have accepted his invitation to speak at his Third London Colloquium next month. I would also like to return the compliment and, on behalf of the Roger Casement Foundation, invite him to contribute to our sixth Annual Casement Symposium, taking place in Buswell's Hotel on Saturday, September 28th. Likewise, I trust that Mr McCormack will keep Irish Times readers informed of his response to this invitation. - Yours, etc.,

JACK MOYLETT,

Secretary,
