Sir, – I refer to Dr John Doherty’s letter (“Casting off the e-voting machines”, June 19th). Why confine this proposal for direct democracy to public houses? Why not the waiting areas in Accident Emergency facilities? Doctors’ waiting rooms? Social welfare offices? Why indeed limit the citizens’ opportunities for expression of dissatisfaction to the Cabinet? Why not have continuing plebiscites about the health service, the national broadcaster, the national football team and whatever you’re having yourself? The possibilities are endless. – Yours, etc,
