Sir, - Nobody seems to have noticed an excellent aspect of the recent Roman document, Dominus Iesus. There is a fine Catholic principle that when experts disagree on any point of law or teaching, Catholics - and others - are not only entitled but expected to take whichever side they think best in the matter. So the document and the accompanying disagreement among the experts have facilitated this freedom of people to make up their own minds - the experts disagreeing often, profoundly and, from our point of view, happily. Disagreeing experts must surely be one of God's kindest gifts to His/Her faithful people. It makes them do what He/She intended they should, namely make up their own minds. - Yours, etc.,
Desmond Wilson, Springhill Close, Belfast 12.
