Madam, – It was with interest that I read Rosita Boland’s article “Céad míle faulty?” (Life Culture, November 5th). In recent times, I too have witnessed a surge of unfriendliness in the Irish personality.

In shopping malls, especially, I have encountered a rudeness beyond belief that is fast becoming the norm – from shop attendants who refuse to make eye contact, to shoppers who brush rudely past.

Have we as a society lost the “milk of human kindness” or was this trait a figment of the imagination? Whatever the answer, let us remember that, more than ever, we live in a society in need of human kindness.

Madam, – Rosita Boland recently wrote about the disappointment felt by visitors to Ireland. Poor Olli Rehn – céad míle defaulty? – Yours, etc,
