A chara - At long last an article in support of the late President, the "single greatest champion the Constitution ever had" (Mr Justice O'Flaherty, SC, The Irish Times, September 29th). It was a wonderful, inspiring vision of a man who served his country well and who appears to have been "shafted".
Whether or not the rumours associated with his demise shortly after his resignation from the Presidency were true, Mr O Dalaigh must have suffered greatly when the Coalition Government of the day did not lift a finger in his support.
I am grateful to Mr Justice O'Flaherty for reminding me of Mr O Dalaigh's love and great affection for children. I was a child of about seven years when I first met the former President at an tOireachtas when I was performing a play with my class: his warm greetings and his manner with children must have been one of his great gifts. I, too, was inspired by his beautiful Irish.
