Celebrity diets and other fads

Sir, – At this time of year in particular we are subjected to the pontifications of celebrity nutrition “experts” advising the nation on the best way to manage its burgeoning waistline.

Sugar has replaced fat as the demonised nutrient. However, the current scientific evidence tells us that the fundamental issue is that of energy balance. So before your readers fixate on sugar as the latest fad, they should give some consideration to lowering the energy density of their diet by increasing fruit and vegetable intake, managing portion sizes and being calorie-aware. It might actually yield results for anyone who wants lasting weight loss beyond January. – Yours, etc,
