A Chara, - I write to you lest the centenary of a great patriotic Irishman should pass unnoticed. This Friday, March 16th, is the 100th anniversary of the death of John O'Leary. His portrait by John Butler Yeats hangs in the National Gallery. Perhaps his greatest service to his country, during a long life, was his "capture" of the young poet Willie Yeats for Ireland.
He was buried from St Andrew's Church in Westland Row to the republican plot in Glasnevin. He is immortalised in two poems by W.B. Yeats, September 1913and Beautiful Lofty Things. These will be read at his graveside at 3pm on Friday. - Yours, etc,
ANTHONY JORDAN, Gilford Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
