Madam, - Recent reports have disclosed that ethanol is one of the leading contenders in the race to produce a biofuel to reduce our dependence on oil - so much so, indeed, that many powerful companies are investing heavily in its development.
With ethanol a product of sugar beet, can anyone explain to me why the Government should destroy - at great cost - a well established sugar beet industry with a ready source of raw material and the skilled workforce and plants needed for handling and processing it?
A simple switch of end product from sugar to ethanol could save many jobs and reduce our dependence on imported fuels by many millions of euro. - Yours, etc,
JOSEPH O'CONNELL, Butterfield Park, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
