Madam, - Dermott Barrett (September 19th) regards the loss of filling stations and suburban cul-de-sacs as a sign of a greedy population. Is it not more optimistic and progressive to view it as a sign that we are recovering from our addiction to suburban sprawl and heavy traffic?

Higher-density housing is going to become increasingly important to accommodate our growing population, while perhaps fewer filling stations will discourage car use, especially in the city. This all leads to a more vibrant and sustainable city. So let the development continue! - Yours, etc,
