Sir - I note that the Minister for Housing and urban Renewal, Mr Molloy, nas begun a campaign to reduce the number of young children killed on our roads each year. (The Irish Times, April 19th).

Children are most vulnerable when alighting from or embarking on school buses, particularly in rural areas.

Would it not be a good idea if we adopted the American school bus system? In the Us, all school buses are equipped with flashing amber lights connected with the door which in law give the bus the same status as a pedestrian crossing. The rule is the traffic cannot pass in either direction while children are embarking or alighting.,

this may cause some inconvenience to road users but it would be worthwhile if it reduced the number of tragic deaths of our children. - Yours etc.,
