Madam, - The letter of the First Councillor of the Turkish Embassy (November 30th) is in striking contrast to the view of the Anglican chaplain in Istanbul, Canon Ian Sherwood. On the basis of 17 years' residence there he has said that "those who represent Christianity are threatened, harassed and physically abused".

If there is religious freedom in Turkey, can the Theological College, which was forcibly closed by the Turkish authorities, reopen?

I am glad to hear that the church on the island in Lake Van, which I have visited, has been renovated. But Eastern Turkey is peppered by fine Armenian churches in a state of utter neglect. - Yours, etc,
