Madam, – Patsy McGarry (Home News, June 16th) is wrong in his description of Cardinal Murphy O’Connor as “former Catholic primate of England and Wales”. The English and Welsh Catholic church has a president, who is elected by the Bishops’ Conference.
It has long been my contention that the Irish Catholic Church would be far more effective on a national level if the Irish church had more flexibility in its choice of a nominal national leader. – Yours, etc,
