Sir, – Last week, as a result of its corporate thinking, the Church of Ireland house of bishops proposed and steered through the general synod a motion reiterating a definition of marriage as “a holy mystery in which one man and one woman become one flesh . . .” and “The Church of Ireland affirms, according to our Lord’s teaching that marriage is in its purpose a union permanent and life-long, for better or worse, till death do them part, of one man with one woman, to the exclusion of all others on either side”.
My sole thinking leads me to believe that divorce and remarriage is irreconcilable with this definition of marriage. Then I recall that the introduction of divorce was actively supported by the same house of bishops.
