Madam, - I read with interest of yet another change in the English language as spoken by the CIA (World News, November 22nd). We have had classics in the past, such as "behaviour adjustment" to describe sleep deprivation. Now CIA director Porter Goss maintains the agency does not engage in torture but uses "unique and innovative ways" to extract information. Funny, then, to claim the proposed ban on the use of "cruel, inhuman or degrading" treatment would obstruct the CIA in its innovative ways. - Yours, etc,
