Madam, - Kevin Myers's comments on the court case arising after the death of an infant boy after circumcision prompts me to suggest that his cogent reasoning about mutilation (and manipulation) could be applied also to whole swathes of the biotechnology venture which is now confronting humanity. Courts, cultures and consciences must stand before the bar of reason.

While the greater part of the media herd, both print and electronic, thrives on the dissonance of endless chatter, the show-me-the-money way apparently, some thoughtful people are making the argument for consonance. Your Derek Scally informed us on December 24th that there is a consensus movement under way in Germany, attempting to build bridges across polarised fault-lines, or what is referred to as "sense building" to overcome the lack of reflection endangering the cohesion of society.

Colum Kenny's letter of December 29th tells us that DCU is listening and is now itself exploring that pathway. You too, please, keep listening and tell us more. - Yours, etc,
