A chara, – While walking through Drumcondra on the day of the Croke Park semi-final between Tyrone and Cork, we came across a large number of Northern-registered cars that had been clamped. They were parked partially on a footpath, but in an area in front of the closed Drumcondra library, with still adequate space for pedestrians to get past.
I support the efforts to maintain free-flowing traffic in Dublin, and correct parking where possible, but there are some factors which do impact here. The main rail link between Dublin and Belfast is now shut, pushing many GAA fans onto the roads rather than using rail. This made parking in the area more difficult than would normally have been expected for such a game.
We should welcome visitors to Dublin, and be sympathetic. Particularly when such a large event is taking place in a venue that, if it were being sited today, would not receive planning permission there due to the lack of parking space.
Clamping, in the circumstances, just didn’t seem correct. – Is mise,
