Sir, - You can tell the well-bred, literate dog in Greystones nowadays.
He's the one minding his own business, running along a corridor clearly delineated by railings on the seaward side and a broad white line on the railway side.
He knows what he's doing, for the ground-rules are plain, no matter what end of the corridor he starts. They're under his nose. In large, white capitals, and words of one syllable - DOG WALK.
He casts a casual glance at the red boxes strapped to posts here and there on the pedestrian side of the white line. But he pays no heed to the notice printed on the box. That's for his owner, who's following after him, and who, he imagines, is as well-bred as himself, and no less literate. And who, by now, is sufficiently well-trained to follow the injunction: "Clean up after your dog." - Yours, etc.,
Matthew Byrne, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
