Madam, – By signing the order to close down the infamous Guantánamo concentration camp President Barack Obama has delivered a hugely important message to a watching world.
Is it now too much to hope that he will return the territory of Guantánamo Bay to its rightful owners, the people of Cuba? This action would not only right a grievous wrong to a tiny and inoffensive neighbour, but would send out a highly significant signal that we might expect decency, justice and real moral values to be the driving forces of this new Washington administration. And it goes without saying that the pernicious economic blockade maintained on Cuba since the early 1960s should immediately end.
I believe we are entitled to expect no less from the first black President of the US.
– Yours, etc,
