Sir, - I agonise with Terry Browne (October 19th) over his concern at the proposed "re-ordering" of the sanctuary of Cobh Cathedral.

Anyone who is in any doubt as to how appalling such "reorderings" can be, should visit the Cathedral of St Patrick in Armagh. In that exuberantly decorated statement of 20th century Gothic, the sanctuary, "re-ordered" post-Vatican II, must be one of the most hideous and incomprehensible in Europe.

The Cathedral at Cobh is one of the most eye-catching buildings in Ireland, particularly when viewed from the seaward approach. It would be a pity if its inward beauty became a contrast to its magnificent exterior. - Yours, etc.,
