Sir, – While I sympathise with Paul O’Sullivan’s stance on the lack of effective community services (September 1st), please spare a thought for us, the disenfranchised recent emigrants, burdened with negative equity and large mortgage repayments for the next 20 to 30 years.

Have we not paid enough already? Stamp duty, VAT on new homes, development levies, and of course exorbitant prices. In my case a considerable amount of my wages go every month to pay for my previous irrational exuberance, our 67sq m bedroom home in Dublin. What benefit do I, and many like me, get for paying a property tax? For the foreseeable future I cannot even raise my children in Ireland. – Yours, etc,
