Sir, – I was somewhat surprised at the positioning of the dignitaries at the 1916 commemoration as photographed by Aidan Crawley (Home News, April 9th). How the event organiser decided to ignore the magnificent GPO building with its wonderful architecture and broad columns as a photographic back-drop to the event perplexes me. I hope someone with a little more vision and a sense of history is engaged to organise this event in 2016, and will learn from this “dry run”.
I am assuming that the official who positioned An Taoiseach directly under an Ann Summers sign is chuckling this morning, but I suppose better there than standing near a person mentioned in a Tribunal report (now there’s an official with some vision and a sense of history!) As to the photograph of the Naval Service sailor who collapsed, I feel this was a cheap shot unworthy of The Irish Times; this poor man like others was probably standing for hours awaiting the dignitaries who were probably driven to the event and whisked away soon afterwards.
There but for the grace of God . . . – Yours, etc,
