Madam, - A current radio advertisement for Vodaphone begins with some of the words from Silent Night and takes up the line that it won't be a silent night when your new Vodaphone starts ringing.

All I could think of was the soldier in the first World War who began to sing this carol across no-man's land and how soldiers from both sides shared some fraternity for a time among all the carnage.

Surely some things are sacred and should not be sold cheaply whether you believe in religion or not? Surely Vodaphone can come up with an ad that doesn't have to take its idea from a song about the birth of Jesus Christ?

Please let's try to remember what this time of year is about - thinking of those less fortunate than ourselves, love for our fellow man and woman, and peace for all. - Yours, etc,
