Concurrent sentences

Sir, – I share your correspondent Michael Rooney's bewilderment (November 14th). If someone out there can provide us with a believable explanation, he or she might also enlighten us as to the thinking behind concurrent sentences for multiple offences. In a recent report which your newspaper carried on the stabbing of a Dublin Gaelic football player, it was stated that the attacker, aged 32, had 62 previous convictions.

Is it possible that the legal system is overseen by the same people who run the HSE? – Yours, etc,
